PICNIC: Pop-Folk Contemporary Illustration

PICNIC: Pop-Folk Contemporary Illustration

PICNIC
POP-FOLK CONTEMPORARY ILLUSTRATION
Designed by Retina y Retinette/ Published in 2011 by Promopress, Barcelona Spain
Hardcover: 272 pages

A visual celebration of retro illustration and modernist graphic design reinvented by 45 international artists, Picnic recalls the traditional, more artisanal styles of iconic graphic designers such as Saul Bass and Friz Freleng, showcasing a stunning presentation of artwork featuring silkscreen printing, hand lettering, collage, and typography, with a contemporary twist.

This refreshing work recalls the golden age of graphic design in the 50s and 60s, while showcasing the work of a new generation of designers using hand-made, more organic design techniques to create and inspire their illusations and artwork. The visual eclectic mix of works on display is a celebration and reinvention of the artisanal methods once used in graphic design.

PICNIC is a collection of the better works of a new wave of international artists, that collects the new tendencies of illustration inspired in the modernism and the folk tradition. Traditional techniques of the old school are used, like silkscreen, collage, engraving, drawing by hand, lettering,,, that give to the works an enormous personality and originality, and that they move away of the tendency minimalist of the last decade. This refreshing work is a recognition to the age of gold of the graphic design of the years 50 and 60 of the 20th century in Europe. PICNIC recalls the techniques used by the large teachers of the design and the illustration, Saul Bass, John Hubley, Friz Felang and legends of the Pop graphic design as Milton Glaser, Paul Rand and Edelman. PICNIC is a fusion of all these references and influences, adapted and reinvented to satisfy the needs and current reality. (Huh?) (Translated from Spanish translate.google.com)
