farewell

farewell

La Salle Elementary School was a very small public school in the uptown section of New Orleans. The building was later used as The New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts.

I lived on the same block and went to grades 3-6 here.

When I went back to my old neighborhood, I was shocked to see this sign at the front of the school.

And Perrier St. is now one-way. When did that happen? (It's quite narrow even as a one-way street.)

Memories

Milton H. Latter Memorial Library
St. Charles Ave.
New Orleans

This is one of the most distinguished-looking public libraries I've ever seen. When I was young, I spent lots of Saturdays and summer days here. It was a short bike-ride from my house. As a kid, I didn't realize just how wonderful this building was. On our recent visit to New Orleans, I was happy to see that it looked quite similar to the way I remember it.

Originally a mansion built in the early 20th century, the building was donated to the city by the Latter family. With a large yard and a wide, inviting porch, this library has an elegance that makes you wish all libraries could be housed in such a distinctive building. The location is pure New Orleans -- surrounded by trees and similar mansions with the St. Charles streetcars clanging as they go by.

One unusual aspect of this building is that its front is not perpendicular to the street and sidewalk it faces. Instead, the sides are perpendicular to the side-streets, which come into St. Charles Ave. at an angle. The angle is difficult to perceive from this photo, but you can see it by clicking the Map link on this page. The lot takes an entire city block, and the angle provides an extra measure of interest, despite it being such an unusual feature.

This is not a clear picture, but I shot it from a moving streetcar. It's one of four quick shots I got, and this one is the best of the bunch. :-)

Waiting for a coat of paint (for Arena Bowl XXII)

Waiting for a coat of paint (for Arena Bowl XXII)

The people at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans create more than just Mardi Gras floats. They've provided these football players for the Sugar Bowl, BCS championship, the Super Bowl, and other games. (They also make those goofy cows for some of the Chick-fil-A commercials.)

Arena Bowl XXII was today and featured Philadelphia against San Jose. I shot this photo shortly before those teams made it to the final stage of the playoffs, so these players are in their "standard" white uniforms waiting to find out which teams they would "join," while also waiting for a fresh coat of paint.

Don't you hate it when only one person in the group looks toward the camera?
