Chimes of Isengard

Chimes of Isengard by HorsePunchKid.
I had been wondering why this giant replica of the Tower of Isengard was going up. It turns out it's just the new carillon.

More info here:

"A $1.5 million outright gift pledge from H. Richard McFarland of Indianapolis will help fund construction of a carillon/campanile, which will be named in memory of McFarland’s wife, Sarah “Sally” McFarland. Plans for a privately funded carillon on the Urbana-Champaign campus have been in the works since the 1980s. The carillon will be able to produce fully harmonized, elaborate music, including compositions written specifically for the carillon as well as transcriptions of music written for other instruments."

Not nearly as fun as the old Altgeld carillon, where people who just wandered up were sometimes invited to play the bells...

I remember years ago going up and playing on the practice keyboard at Altgeld. It was quite a challenge--big levers that had about a foot of travel that would strike xylophone bars to sound the notes, mimicking the actual instrument.
