Audience members listened intently as Hugh told a story about a time when soldiers sitting on tanks were asked what scared them the most, and they responded that it was the singing and dancing. “South Africa to a great extent was liberated through music being a major catalyst. In 1985 there was no one recording a CD without a song saying ‘Free South Africa, Down with Apartheid, Free Mandela.’” People all over the world pressured governments through song, to free South Africa, in all languages. Hugh noted the pioneer of that strategy, Miriam Makeba (his former wife). When she addressed the UN General Assembly she was the first person to publicize what was happening in South Africa.
