Royal Exchange

First built by Sir Thomas Gresham in 1565 at his own expense (the plot of land was provided for 'free') and was modelled on the Stock Exchange of Antwerp. Was given the 'Royal' title in 1571 by Elizabeth I.

Destroyed by the fire of London in 1666 and rebuilt by Edward Jerman - completed in 1669 and was modelled on the original.

In 1838 fire broke out in the "Lloyd's Room" of the building and was again destroyed. In 1844 Sir William Tite was appointed architect and his design again modelled the original layout.

Survived World War II intact , additional floors were added in 1991 and remodelled in 2001 to become a luxury brand shopping centre.
