I want to know too! I used to eat these in Malaysia and so loved them. Haven't had one in years and years.

Warda -- Mangosteen is grown in tropical climates -- I just bought a pack of 4 in my local Harris Teeter (in Northern Virginia) for $10! Yep, TEN US Dollars! Yikes! It wasn't so good either. Not like I remember from living in the Philippines.

I love mangosteens! They're called the 'Queen of Fruits' & rightly so - absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, they're SO very expensive here so I don't have more than a couple per year. BTW, durian is supposed to be the 'King of Fruits' & while I find their odour pleasant enough, it's the taste I dislike; the opposite to most people! Mangosteen is a 'yin' food while durian is very 'yang'.

I corresponded with a botanist in India who told me that while there are many varieties (cultivars) of most fruits, mangosteens are all from one species only.

Another delicious tropical fruit is sweetsop (custard apple). Unlike mangosteen, it can be grown here but is frost tender so if grown in climates that get frost, it should be grown in a large pot & taken indoors in winter. It will bear fruit nicely grown in a container & only takes about 2 years before it will bear a few fruit.
