Drive-In Market 1959?
A week's shopping in minutes! And you haven't moved from your car! It's that simple in the drive-in of tomorrow!

Somebody should really jump on this long overdue idea...people would sooooo go for this! Especially those of us with whiny, demanding kids :/

I agree with that completely! It would make shopping a lot more pleasant!

Man Alive! What a concept, and I really like this illustration.

Agreed - I would totally shop at this place. (Especially if bread were still $.23/loaf.) :)

Love the illustration as much as those prices!

If those were flying cars, then it would be perfection!

HARRIS-TEETER here in Charlotte offers something close to this . . Of course, you have to order ahead of time via PC and then go pick it up :) :) . . .

According to a little web search I just completed (so it must be true, right?) the average price for a gallon of milk in 1959 was $1.01 and a loaf of bread was 20 cents. I know prices vary by area but if this was from 1956 they underestimated milk futures by 500%.
Maybe that's for a fifth of milk.

The image was published in 1956. Maybe they are expecting tiny, future sized bottles of milk.

It looks like the artist originally wanted "greek" unreadable text. I swear the first three lines look like children, chile, and turpentine. But then somebody thought there should be something readable and they whited out a couple of lines and wrote in the bread and milk.

They also underestimated the size that tailfins would be in 1959. Wouldn't milk have been sold in quart bottles back then? I make the 2nd 3rd 4th lines at left as ooze, tungsten, and arid pion.

We had a drive in liquor market in a big garage, now it sells beauty supplies.

Now that I think about it, here in the Portland area we used to have a chain of drive-in milk stores called Senn's Dairy. My mom rarely shopped there, but I know they sold milk and juice of some kind, and possibly eggs, or some baked goods, maybe. Sadly, they're all gone now.

AWESOME AD!! As a teenager in Mount Pleasant, SC (just across the bridge from Charleston, SC), we had a drive-through beer & wine store.

@jwbear - I'm glad I am not the only one missing the flying cars.
And while we are at it, whatever happened to whitewall tires?

I like this!

Whatever happened to service attendants in white uniforms with hats and snappy bowties? Nowadays they'd be wearing just a grubby golf shirt or some sort of unflattering indestructible smock.

Awesome picture...ludicrous idea. Americans are too fat and lazy as it is!

If you think grocery shopping was easy back then, you should have seen Christmas shopping. Your selections came out already wrapped.
