Ralph screwed up 10/52

Ralph screwed up this week. He bit someone. We have been going to obedience classes on Wednesdays and a friend drops Ralph off at my shop an hour before we class starts. This was the second time he had

come to my shop and he had settled

down in the back of my shop while i

worked. The bell rang signaling that someone had come in so we went to the front. Ralph walked towards the person who was talking to me and when he got within 5 feet his hackles went up and he crouched. I yelled Ralph NO!!!! And he lunged and bit the guy in the knee. I quickly grabbed him. It happened so fast and I didn't expect Ralph to do something like that. Not knowing Ralph's history I should have been more wary. We had a friend come to our house a few weeks ago and he wouldn't stop growling and barking at her. We rarely have anyone come to our house but clearly Ralph has issues with people entering his territory. Ralph is so sweet and loving that it's hard to believe he has this protective side to him.

We are now on high alert and have to really work on showing Ralph that we are in control. He does not have to protect us from intruders. He will have to wear a muzzle if he comes to my shop again and he will also be attached to me by a leash. I can not have a vicious or unpredictable dog. We love this dog too much to not work with him to get over this hurdle. The trainer suggested that this may be why Ralph was initially dumped.

I'm hoping that if any of you have any helpful suggestions that you let me know.

I've had too many losses in the last year and a half. i can't lose Ralph, too. Please help if you can. Thanks, Holly and Ralph.
