My Rare Portrait Photoshoot with GR Digital with Wide Angle Lens

My Rare Portrait Photoshoot with GR Digital with Wide Angle Lens by hirosan.
I rarely do portraits but somehow, I thought I wanted to give myself a chance in severe (low-light) conditions.
I was also let this high-end compact digital camera, GR Digital with 21mm equivalent wide angle lens, challenge at higher ISO setting.
What would you say?

Hirosan, I like the expression on her face. The tones are very soft - nice shot.

Thanks, Chris.

I never asked her anything for this photoshooting, simply asked her to have a seat in a comfortable chair.

It turned out quite acceptable even though this is taken at ISO800.
I would rather raise ISO settings than use flash, relying on natural lightings.

After all, it's all about the a nice person and a camera that I use!

By the way, a camera w/ wide-angled lens takes very interesting hotel photos!

Cool Hirosan & arigato. I actually am looking into a wide angle lense...I've got much to learn to take some decent Hotel images! =)

Wide angle lens is quite handy for landscapes and building photos. I get very interesting yet impressive results from it. On the other hand, it is hard to get a decent images when doing portraits.

I rarely get chances to stay at fancy (I mean, gorgeous and expensive) hotels, so this was the special occasion for a photoshoot!

Hello lc1fz1,

Thanks for your comment!
Since GR Digital has a relatively deep Depth of Field so the model has covered all the weakness of the camera and my technique, indeed!

Nice portrait. The low noise at 800 is quite impressive for a compact. My Canon Powershot A540 has a lot more noise than that.

Thanks!
We have a couple of choices when we have no tripod or nothing to support the camera: low ISO and expect some blurry photos, or use higher ISO to get the decent photo but more noise and degraded colour and sharpness, and this camera sure has tuned differently than other cameras that can take photos at ISO 800 or higher.
Some complain GRD has more noise, but in my opinion, it is more usable than other digital camera manufacturars and leaves more colours and sharpness than FinePixes.
But for a compact camera with small CCD, it sure does a fair job and I am quite happy with it.

wonderful pic..!! Portraits get me emotional over a long period of time. landscapes no matter how stunting at first sight, you usually forget it soon. so i am going to remember this photo for a long time....and the flower on that hair...real nice..!!

Thank you for your time to take a look at this photo!
Actually, your comment made me very happy and I was delighted to hear someone feels like the way my friend and I did, too!

She suddenly asked to take a photo of herself as she put a flower on her hair, and GRD comes with wide angle lens and I had the conversion lens attached so I had to frame her in the middle.
My friend as well as I was happy with the photo and and this photo became her favourite one, too!

Well, sometimes ISO800 is not too bad...
I just think it is rare because it is rare for me to get such a result!
GR Digital comes with fairly fast lens in its class, I am happy I got this photo with her...

Since most photos of mine do not stay in Explore even after a brief showup, sometimes old ones come up then drop time to time... It seems that this one stays in explore for long time probably because not many people even try to shoot portrait photo with GR Digital with 21mm wide angle lens!
Certain photos come up again when I am posting the same series (like GR Digital, FinePix, MacBook, travel, gadgets and so on...)
But I still don't know why my gorillapod head photo is in explore :(

Heard about greasemonkey, but it also carries some security risks, as many online publications pointed out :/

It is obvious indeed, but true. This is the only photo approved by herself.
It was just about right timing and right situation, she did not hide from my camera that time so it was the perfect moment for her portrait!

If I stop taking silly candid photos but taking photos by seriously facing to the subject, I might do okay...

Maybe this is what we do (you especially) but digitally:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lomography

The following are the company's 10 Rules of Lomography:

1. Take your LOMO everywhere you go and whenever you go.
2. Use it any time - day or night.
3. Lomography is not an interference in your life, but a part of it.
4. Shoot from the hip.
5. Approach the objects of your lomographic desire as close as possible.
6. Don't think.
7. Be fast.
8. You don't have to know beforehand what you've captured on film.
9. You don't have to know afterwards, either.
10. Don't worry about the rules.

Pretty much true! Not many cameras that allow to do this, right?
Kodak V705, GR Digital and FinePix Z are the good ones for this practice... Thanks for reminding me of this :)

Same here. That's why I love my GR Digital more than GX100 :)

As many others classify GX100 a professional compact camera, it is for carefully framing and adjusting the settings and shoot whereas GRD is a quick weapon that allows to shoot quick. GX100 comes with zoom and better LCD screen and EVF, and wider lens whereas GRD has the GR lens, whch does give minimal distortion and great macro capability that not many lenses for SLRs offer.

I personally love GRD: It just suits my photography needs and I even thought getting rid of GX100, but I learned that GX100 allows to do more and it would be a good camera to learn about photography so I am keeping both cameras.
There are many other high-end compacts like PowerShot G7 (and G9 has announced recently) and P5000 from Nikon, but what makes GX100 unique is the wide angle lens and GRD unique is GR lens!

I think this portrait is a major success, it really is a stunning picture.

would it be innapropriate of me to ask what shutter speed you used?

Not at all. 1/17, as the EXIF info says.
Though GRD does not come with vibration reduction of image stabilisation of the sort, it allows to take sharp pictures even at slower shutter speed with minimal blur, thanks to strange but unique GR lens.
Sometimes I look at numbers but I often go wild by setting ISO800 and try to hold the camera and myself steady while shooting.
I've got the shutter button spring replaced to the lighter one that helps reduce camera shake by not pressing it hard.
