Backstage at the Takarazuka Revue
|
AKA The story of how a skinny white
American dude, got to meet a gaggle of
mythical, beautiful, incredibly tall
Japanese actresses.
These are pics from my second time attending Takarazuka at the Grand Theatre.
Through my internship, I was able to go backstage and meet the famous Otokoyaku (actresses specializing in Male lead roles) and Musumeyaku (actresses specializing in female roles).
UPDATE (5/08): I've just gotten back from seeing my 3rd show, during my April 2008 vacation to Japan. Those pics coming soon!
UPDATE (1/10): I've written about my fascination with the theater, and my experiences backstage at the Takarazuka Revue for my zine, Electric Ant #2. Now, the complete article is online here: electricantzine.com/ea2-revue.html
I've also posted a second feature from the issue, an in-depth interview with actress/playwright/researcher Zehra Fazal, who spent an entire summer working backstage at the revue and then later translated and staged Rose of Versailles at Wellesley for her senior thesis: electricantzine.com/ea2-zehra.html
