The straw that broke this camels back

The straw that broke this camels back by Jon Hicks.
Thats it. Thats the last social service that involves me adding all my friends in all over again. Life is too chuffing short.

Please, can someone come up with some way of avoiding this repetition of 'buddies'?!

I still gave in of course....

Now you see, someone should buy Gravatar off Tom (or throw him some VC money) and sort this **** out once and for all. Centralised buddies... API and Micro floor matts for all.... yay... tag it web 4.0

Gravatar? Schmavatar. It needs work before it'll handle mine (and I suspect others') usage; it shouldn't assume that there is a 1:1 relationship between Individuals and Email addresses. Every place I see that use gravatars fail to pick mine up because I don't use a single email address for everything.

If these social sites just had an XFN importer then I suspect that'd solve 99% of your problem here, Jon.

I didn't say Gravatar was perfect, hence the need for work. The trouble with XFN is it's for lonely geeks... Gravatar has a fairly straightfoward UI and is a bit more accessible to the world at large.

And, the last time I looked, you could associate multiple email addresses with your Gravatar... it's been a while since I looked though.

I stand corrected then! That wasn't there last time I checked. I'll have to give it a go. I'm not sure about the lonely geeks thing though, although I will agree with the geeks part. What it really needs is some so-easy-to-use-it's-stupid-not-to service that does it all for you. I imagine there's half a dozen already in development. Heck, all it'd take is some extra markup on a site like Friendster or MySpaz and you're halfway there (although I can't see any lonely geeks signing up on the latter unless seriously pressed).

Cheapskate!

I agree with both of you, XFN would be good, but as John says, its very much geeks only. The Gravatar model is a good basis, but as John says it needs to be taken up by someone big so that it can given as a free service.

Hmm. Yahoo...? Although as I recall, they have their own avatar system. It's probably got a web services API for non-Yahoo sites as well, I imagine.

As far as paying for features of gravatar goes, most sites that feature avatars (that I use) don't support it, so I don't see the value of paying for extra addresses for those few that do. Especially when really all I'm really doing is making somebody else's site look better.

Forget the paying for email addresses thing, the basic idea of gravatar is a good one. Name, email address, avatar - simple. Its not about making someone site look better (you could argue it does the opposite), its about recognising someone.

A centralised identity/buddy system for social web apps ain't gonna happen, so this is all just so much fart anyway.
