NetNewsWire 3 beta

Know these guys. Seen them in concert a few times. Hilarious Fountain Valley geeks.
NetNewsWire 3 beta by Jon Hicks.
A while ago I wrote about using NetNewsWire as a browser:

With the new NetNewsWire 3 beta (and its updated combined view, which I love), the browser choice is even harder.

What I love is that we're finally seeing browser innovation without making nightmares for web developers. The fact that rendering engines have largely been decoupled from browsers means companies can take an engine and go nuts without hurting us developers. I love it.

I still think that the user interface model used to organize subscriptions, in NetNewsWire and NewsFire (and almost every RSS feed reader except NewsMacPro) is not the correct one. It is useful if you have no more than 30 subscriptions, but if you have more, things must happen in a different way. One "layer" should be for subscription organization and "tagging", and other "layer" for viewing and reading. I think that hierarchical models don't work with a lot of items, instead of that, a "database" model could be more adequate. "Channels" should be like playlists in iTunes, not the subscriptions themselves. Anyway, that's a really nice screenshot, I like the "Hick's NetNewsWire minimal style". Hope to see more improvements in those betas!

@ Croftie: Very good point, let's hope that practice continues, especially on Windows (apps with a Mozilla engine anyone?)

I'm using the free and excellent Vienna. But even that is rooted firmly in the space FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, NewsFire all stemmed from. Something new like this makes me want to take another look.
