sunset in suburbia

sunset in suburbia by [phil h].
In the suburbs of Paris. April 2006.

I am a weak person.
I have succumbed to the lure of HDR photography.

My hands against my ears I attend your verdict... ;)

The vivid greens and yellows—even on the lens flare—are impressive. Likewise with the shadows. It's very surreal... I expect a hobbit or leprechaun to stroll by. :)

LOL!
Actually, Phil, if the green is toned down, this is a perfect example of when HDR works.

It's ok to give in to these things sometimes. I'm waiting for a new tripod before I try out this great technique.
BTW although some of the software to do this is easy they're not always all that great when they come out, this is a great one I hope when HDR takes me I can do it this well.

[phil h]  Pro User  says:

thanks much everyone.
I particularly appreciate your comments on this first try with the mentioned technique.

@solea: it certainly seems that way.
The way I see it, HDR, or at least 'increased dynamic range', are techniques that'll be here to stay - especially in light of technical advancements like high-definition television and what have you.

What I'm personally interested in seeing is the process of it turning from a mere novelty effect (which has brought us countless tastelessly overdone HDR images just for the sake of using the technique) to it being simply another processing technique that creates variety in the photographic landscape while furthering artistic expression or a certain aesthetic sense.

So this is what you can do with HDR. Great how you've transformed a dull boring image of a dull boring suburb into something really exciting.
Was the leprechaun still hanging around after St Patrick's day?

sorry to ask but..
how the hell do you do that thing with HDR (i've never done it)

[phil h]  Pro User  says:

thanks again for your comments.

@dz: you might want to have a look around flickr's HDR group all kinds of information about the technique. - And yes, you should be able to use the technique even with a s#@tty camera.

@philippe: merci.
it feels sublime of course. especially since I'm not even blonde.... these days :P

Why do the purists hate HDR so badly? I know they would say that it is unnatural or something like that.

Tell Ansel Adams that Black and White is also unnatural....

Great work.

Very nice HDR shot ! There's kind of a fantasy atmosphere in this photo, very unreal as HDR can do perfectly.
