Decimal?! Hexadecimal counting with the fingers (from 00 to FF)

    Newer Older

    Eight fingers and two thumbs imply decimal counting from one to ten?
    Even for learning the numbers by counting with the fingers, hexadecimal is more logical and efficient than decimal:

    With the right hand it´s possible to count from 0 to F, by moving the thumb to the finger´s tips and knuckles in the following order:

    0 = little finger´s tip
    1 = little finger´s top knuckle
    2 = little finger´s middle knuckle
    3 = little finger´s base knuckle

    4 = ring finger´s tip
    5 = ring finger´s top knuckle
    6 = ring finger´s middle knuckle
    7 = ring finger´s base knuckle

    8 = middle finger´s tip
    9 = middle finger´s top knuckle
    A = middle finger´s middle knuckle
    B = middle finger´s base knuckle

    C = index finger´s tip
    D = index finger´s top knuckle
    E = index finger´s middle knuckle
    F = index finger´s base knuckle

    If the left hand is used for the powers of sixteen,
    its possible to count from zero to FF = 255:

    00 = little finger´s tip
    10 = little finger´s top knuckle
    20 = little finger´s middle knuckle
    30 = little finger´s base knuckle

    40 = ring finger´s tip
    50 = ring finger´s top knuckle
    60 = ring finger´s middle knuckle
    70 = ring finger´s base knuckle

    80 = middle finger´s tip
    90 = middle finger´s top knuckle
    A0 = middle finger´s middle knuckle
    B0 = middle finger´s base knuckle

    C0 = index finger´s tip
    D0 = index finger´s top knuckle
    E0 = index finger´s middle knuckle
    F0 = index finger´s base knuckle

      Cool...

      ..although, personally, I use finger-binary and count up to 1023 instead. :-)

      That's Numberwang!

      Interesting idea, but the only time I ever count on my fingers is after a lot of drinking and then even ten fingers can be challenging.

      Seen in Math World pool.

      But if you drink a lot, its great for the waitor, when he can count to fifteen with one hand, bringing your drinks with the other...

      Concerning finger binary: I dont think its a good idea. Its very acrobatic and less easy to understand. Applied in a kindergarden it would cause rather tears and confusion, than a better understanding of numbers. And the hex 3FF is not that important.

      Oh, I agree... I didn't claim that finger-binary was a practical system. :-)

      Hardly anyone has the dexterity to do it (independent control of the 4th fingers is a real killer).

      But I still enjoy it as a little mental exercise when I'm bored, often using a suitable surface to touch against the tips of the relevant fingers.
