Reflecting (on) February 2008

    Reflecting (on) February 2008.

This image represents the second of the key outcomes of the eyes } world { hands 2008 project. The image is a composite, equally representing all 29 individual eye images taken during February 2008. As such, then, this image represents the average eye for the month. The superimposition concept was inspired by the Australian National Photographic Portrait Project by Raimond De Weerdt, Karen Donnelly and Tony Nott. In 2002 I had the opportunity of being one of 50 faces contributing to the male portrait of the Faces of Albury.

Compare the image above with the composite image for January.

Comments and critiques (as well as faves...) are welcome!

Made EXPLORE on 28 February 2009 (Max: #116)
Note the date is due to dateline shift between Australia and the USA

Thijs thanks for praise...yes it is a reflection, of me actually, caused by all the reflections in the initial images..

i used to think that a shot that warranted an explanation was inherently never as good as a shot that didn't... however, there are exceptions to that rule. at the de young museum in SF is a HUGE blown up picture of a bunch of dots that look like they are vibrating.... on its surface, eh.. .. but when you read the description, you realize that this is an image of protons oscillating and the movement seen is actually the inert energy.. or something scientific like that..... i cant remember the exact description, but either way it made me go.. wow.

your picture has the same effect on me. on its surface, its a pretty good shot, composition speaking.. i like the squares on black, each slightly off kilter from the other giving it a feeling that you had all these shots and just stacked them, haphazardly on a table.. very cool...

when you read that this is the average eye for the month of February, then you get a deeper feeling for the shot... its then, that you start to analyze it more... i stare at the eye.... the eyebrows...the lines around the eyes... cheeks..i stare at the hair... the side of the face.. it all becomes very surreal and interesting.. each line.. each crack, crevice,... each one is a representation of a different day and how it all comes together is very fascinating to me.... i am glad you put in a description, because i would have never enjoyed this shot as much without it.

This is cool. I would never have expected something like this. It's really interesting how you can see the faint glasses and eyebrows. I don't think I can really criticise this shot, because there's really nothing to criticise.

Innovative, and in a way, meaningful. The end result is also surprisingly effective. Your description was very useful in giving more understanding, which is good, but I feel an image must be able to stand on it's own and be judged purely as a photograph. This image is more than capable of doing that. It is an intriguing piece of art.

andrew, thanks for comment & praise.

Beautiful image! I really like the fact that the more you look at the photo the more detail you see... the fain outlines of the eyebrows, glasses, ears. I really like the odd eye colour too.
