Basicly, I don't like people who sign on walls and trees, but there are some exeptions. In Australia it is an old tradition. Still we can see famous "dig trees" from XIX-th century, made by first European discoverers of Aussie. In Northern Territory on baobab tree still visible over 150 years, on gumtree Burke & Wills Dig Tree in South Aus. and another near Birdsville, Q. We also can admire Aboriginal art in many places on rocks and caves, sometimes 15.000-20.000 years old! Photo is nice! And as know, bamboo is a grass not tree :))!

I do agree with the issue of vandalism and defacement...yet in this case the sheer mass of it, as well as the respect each inscription pays to the others, makes this bamboo thicket a magical place...the oldest inscription goes back to 1974--but I remember seeing one as far back as the mid 1950s (but not in a photogenically accessible spot)

I never thought, bamboo is able to live so long! I also didn't know you are professor and specialist of Australian history! You should know I am Pole, and that is why, it is important to me how other poles and stics, polished and unpolished live. By the way: politness (& also unpolitness too) comes from Poland.
All the best 2 u for NEW Year 2008!

I love what you've done with this. The colors are so deep and saturated and the minimal Orton is great. Fantastic shot.
heritagefutures (66 months ago | reply)
Thanks. The sprayed on water mist really brings out the colours....

I see graffitti is rampant in Oz - not even the bamboo is safe!
Very interesting contrast of colours and textures, but the calligraphy — of course — makes the whole picture come alive.
Excellent job.

This is just a cool photo. That sums it up for me. Great idea. The eye of the photographer sees things differently than the normal/average/everyday/whatever you want to call them person. Great shot, well done.

This award acknowledges the high quality of your comments on the five photos in the "Life Thru A Lenz" photostream following this post. Thank you very much. We value your contribution to our group.
Your achievement has also been mentioned within the Golden Lens Club (December) thread within Life Thru A Lenz (Comment Group)."

Thanks for that. Unexpected... I think if you take part in such a group then you should be taking it seriously..that way you'll get good and detailed critques as well, and that improves your own work... One can see it that leaving detailed feedback is in the end quite selfserving ;-)

YOu're not in my 'regulation five' in this comment group, but had to stop by and check this out, as the thumbnail was so compelling. Fascinating subject, and I really like the treatment. I only got PHotoshop for CHristmas, but can already recognise the Orton effect - used to great effect here.
Would love to know more of the backstory of why they are carved, what the cultural significance and tradition is.

Thanks for the sentiments, Kate. The tradition is in principle like that of carving love hearts into a tree...except that here one attracts the other and induces people to carve names into the new growth..sort of like some graffiti attracts more graffiti...
