Al Sharpton, 1989 Protest March, Brooklyn NY

Bodyguard from Nation of Islam
African National Congress (ANC) t-shirt.
Al Sharpton, 1989 Protest March, Brooklyn NY by hellochris.
Al Sharpton leading the first of dozens of protest marches after 40 white teenagers murdered Yusuf Hawkins, a 16 year old black youth in the (then) white neighborhood of Bensonhurst in Brooklyn.

Al Sharpton bravely led marchers through the Bensonhurst every week for over a year, despite shouts and catcalls and threats to his life. He was stabbed in 1991 during another march in Bensonhurst.

I happened to be home from college during the murder and the first protest march. I stumbled upon Rev. Sharpton and his group assembling in my grammar school's playground and then followed them through the neighborhood. I saw one white guy charge at Reverend Sharpton, only to be quickly knocked to the ground by the police. I saw another guy come out of his house weilding a kitchen knife who the cops also cuffed and led away.

Spike Lee's film Jungle Fever is dedicated in memory of Yusuf Hawkins, and his photograph appears at the beginning of the film.

Came across this when searching flickr. As you have a "Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0" license, I've uploaded this to Wikimedia commons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Al_Sharpt on%2C_1989_Protest_March%2C_Brooklyn_NY.jpg) and added it to the Wikipedia article on Yusef Hawkins ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusef_Hawkins ).

A really historic photo! Thanks for making it available to the world!

I remember those days, we threw water balloons at them as they walked down Cristoforo Colombo blvd. (18th Ave. Bensonhurst) This was a great place to grow up.

Who are you people? The part of Bensonhurst my parents live in now is a combination of Chinese and Russian, Vietnamese and Mexican. Perhaps it is on the very edge, but still, it quite different from 20 years ago. I leave your racial hatred comments unedited.

All of the sudden we're labeled racist for being proud of our nationality. You call truth "racial hatred comments". Proud to be Italian all the way to my grave.

Far as I know, Russians are white.

It is definitely true that a large asian population has moved here. Tons of Asian supermarkets are replacing Met Foods and such. Bay Parkway is starting to look like Grand St.
