Dang he's good!

No wimpy, washed out pastel colors for me. People ask me how I get such vibrant color from watercolor. This is one of my goals... color with passion and courage.

About a year or more ago I went through my pantry and fridge finding these items, running across the street to my daughters house, laying down a Venetian table cloth on their diningroom table and just sort of threw these items on that table.

I didn't want something contrived like we often see, four perfect pears in a perfect row.

I have an Italian heart and when I cook I lay my ingredients out on the island in a similar fashion. Mostly, I wanted to catch the light just at the right moment. At four o'clock in the afternoon the sun comes flooding into my daughters South Carolina window. I wanted the bounce of light to be extreme and exaggerated.

I have always liked the Impressionists still life paintings. I wanted something with bright highlights and deep shadows. As with the impressionists I like how one color alters the color of its adjacent object. You will notice the reflection of the tomatoes onto the cheese or one onion emerging into another. And yes, the dark purpleish tomato, they really do exist. This one, though in the shadows, came off glossy and bright.

Frankly, I admit to having seen better still life art in watercolor. Some are absolutely super or photo realism but I don't see any point to showing people how good I am at reproducing a photograph. I am not out to impress the viewer with anything "gimmicky." I get no satisfation at demonstrating my technical skill or academic dexterity. I want to make an interesting and dynamic picture. For sure, I want it to be a painting... look like one... feel like one. If I wanted a photograph, I would take one.

The Road to Newboyne (St. Peter's Church) by hedrickswatercolors

CAN YOU FEEL THE DAY?

Watercolor on
Arches 140# CP

Size: W. 22" x H. 16"
Framed: W. 30.25" x H. 24.5"
Date: July 3, 2008

In the fall of 2007 I made a trip to my beloved Ontario. Years earlier I had passed this church many times on my way to my friend, Paul LaBerge's farm. This, I admit, is somewhat calendarish. Yet, it captures the quaint, rugged charm of the countryside. I am fond of Canada and especially, the Ottawa Valley where we made our home for almost thirty years. Our best and most abiding friendships were made while living there. In the case of Paul LaBerge, he has been my friend since 1969 and we are still in touch.

In the collection of the artist and available at $750 USD (framed).

I have visited Ljubljana, Slovenia about ten or more times. Over those years, I have taken at least ten photographs of this same individual. Whenever he sees me he immediately strikes a pose. Even though I can't speak Slovene and neither can he speak English we have become friends.

Framed: $1,000
