East of Eden Band, the original performanace poetry band
East of Eden Band is the original performance poetry band started as a duet with poet Hedwig Gorski and her husband, musician/composer D'Jalma Garnier. Performance poetry is a term that Gorski made up to describe to newspapers and fans what it is she and the band do. She wrote poetry only for audio performance and not to print/publish in books and journals. That is the difference between poetry readings of poems written for the page and performance poetry. By definition, performance poetry is written for performance only. The differences and techniques used by poets writing for books and poets writing for audio performance are many. That is why performance poetry is not the same a traditional or enhanced poetry reading. Poetry readings present poets or others reading poems that were written to be printed and published on the page. Printed poetry is about punctuation; whereas performance poetry is about the breath.
Band members pictured are (left to right) Booka Michel, percussion, Horatio "Cola" Rodriguez, Hedwig Gorski, poet/kspoken vocalist, D'Jalma Garnier, composer/guitar.
This photo is taken in front of Lucy in Disquise on South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas, the live music capitol of the world.
