Teotihuacan - "the place where men become gods" (pt. 3)

These mounds are how the whole place looked before excavation and restortion. The buildings and the pyramids were covered with soil and looked like natural mounts. When Hernando Cortes, the Spanish conquistador, retreated from a nearby ancient city, he passed the mounds and noticed nothing.
The Aztec, who came to this place hundreds of years later gave the place it name, Teotihuacan, thinking it was a 'godly' place. Archiologists surmise one of the reasons the Teotihucans ruled a massive area was because of their dominance over these 'sacred ground'. Control religion, control people.

Pyramid of the Sun & Avenue of the Dead Teotihuacan, Mexico
(45 minutes from Mexico City)

The Avenue of the Dead was the main street of Teotihuacan. It ran for more than 2.5 km, beginning at the Moon Plaza to the north and extending beyond the Ciudadela and the Great Compound complexes to the south. According to Millon (Cowgill 1992a:96; Millon 1981:221), the avenue continued even further south, terminating near the edge of the mountains that can be seen in the background of this photo.

The avenue divided the city into two sections. Apartment compounds with pyramidal constructions were arranged on both sides of the avenue, often symetrically and sharing the same orientation. This highly planned city-layout suggests that the avenue may have been planned since its earliest phases of urbanization.

The main sector of the avenue was evidently the section between the Moon Pyramid and the Rio San Juan channel. This part of the avenue was lined with long talud-tablero platforms. Access to flanking residential zones was confined to masonry stairways with balustrades. The width of the avenue varies significantly between different sections, ranging from 40 to 95 meters. A large long channel under the floor of the avenue gathered rain water from neighboring architectural units and drained it into Rio San Juan.

I went to Teotihuacan this past spring and loved it. When I was where this picture was taken from, it had just started raining really hard. There was also a small group of young adults performing some kind of ritual on the top of the pyramid. It was pretty amazing. I didn't know those little snippets of information about the history, either, so thank you for sharing. Sadly, I didn't have my own camera with me while I was there. Luckily enough you did...beautiful pictures!

the mountains are from the perspective of looking towards the moon pyramid and coming up on it. Your photo shows the side view of the sun shooting from the moon

the walker is given a choice with the sun's turn (right) giving life, yet the moon is always there, like a car garage, take a death trip anytime you want, getaway..you look to be there..stare at some ants.
