Boxed by recursion_see_recursion.
A helpfully abandoned and pleasingly corroded advertising frame on the beach at West Bay, Dorset. Interestingly, the Canon autofocus was completely baffled and I ended up setting focus by hand.

Excellent!

Since joining Flickr, I find myself constantly looking for everyday images such as this: an odd framing, a pattern of railings, some 'pleasing corrosion', and so on.

Consequently, the quotidian is enriched and life is enhanced.

Flickr epiphanies?

Yikes!

Interesting how the lack of focus for the content of the frame makes it stand out. I concluded that it's because there are very few out-of-focus pebbles outside the frame.

Yes, as with all those above, this is a good composition with excellent focusing and bokeh. Would not look amiss in an art gallery!

Many thanks for all your thoughtful feedback. Although the frame caught my attention straight away, I got every shot on my first attempt out of focus. I had to drive back 20 miles or so a couple of days later to have another go - and some b*gger had moved the damned thing and its heavy concrete base.

Brilliant framing. The colors are great. Leaving the background slightly out of focus was a great call.

+ excellent focus, looks like a magnifying glass that blurs everything (personal fav :)
- sky a bit too grey, but I guess you couldn't change that ;)

+ great focus and colors!
-I can't tell what the red object is. I don't really care, but if I have to find a negative, that would be it. :)

(boy, this is the second time today, different group, where i have commented on something i saw through a different channel, then posted to a commenting/scoring group that required me to comment again, right under my last comment. and here there's a two hour difference. sheesh)

+great colors (red & green) of the focal elements
+great framing/composition
-is the red frame slightly out of focus? and i guess you could have photoshopped the green tuft of grass and the brown weed out of the picture, just to remove all distractions.

Thanks so much to all of you for all your generous comments and fav's.

ara01, the red object is yer standard British lifesaver packed in a handy plastic container. They're quite common here on beaches and rivers - and a boon to photographers looking for a spot of color.

Rik, sorry about the double commenting burden, I do try not to "scatter-gun" stuff across the groups.

Synes, Rene's ghost is never far ;-)

desdibuix, spooky concidence - interesting how the eye makes the sky in the frame look brighter - almost like a mirror

Helen, the fact that West Bay has a great seafood restaurant has nothing to do with the case ;-)

recursion: oh, no need to apologize for anything. i reread my comment, and it did sound like i was annoyed somehow. actually, i was rather surprised. i'd never had that happen to me before. the first time was a surprise, but it was only 30 minutes apart. yours was the second time in one day, and i first visited your shot about 3 hours before needing to comment on it the second time. no, i didn't mean to suggest that you had scattered your shot around flickr...i was merely surprised that i had found it in two places, needed to comment both times, and had my comments right next to each other.

the short of it (finally!): no worries. it's a great shot, worth seeing and commenting two (now three) times. =]
