@David: A lot of calculating night exposures is trial and error, of course. It also helps to blast a faster exposure at a higher ISO, and then calculate back to what the longer exposure would be at a lower ISO. My experience is that a star light landscape w/o ambient people light generally is about right at 3.5 minutes at f/4 and ISO 640, so I use this as a starting place for a test exposure, with some seat of the pants recalibrations.
