Very interesting... the EXIF info says a 12mm lens... so not a fisheye per say, which explains the fact that the star lines don't all line up... some interesting lens distortion... wow, great shot!

Posted this on your O'Reilly blog entry too, but copying here for oedification. In your O'Reilly blog entry you'd wondered about the purple fringing.

The purple fringing is called amp noise. It is caused by heat in the camera body generated by various things from a sustained drain on the battery to the on-board CPU generating heat. The consequence is that different parts of the CCD are different temperatures, and it throws off the color. Magenta is the most common color for this.

If your body has problems with amp noise like this (and this is a fairly typical level of amp noise for such a long exposure), then it is recommended you shoot wide with the intention of cropping out the amp noise.
