free verse in honour of a lost friend. it may grate a bit on jangled nerves. but bear with me for old times sake. read. and do with it as you wish...

Ode to Vielle

had a friend once upon a time
seems like long ago
came from Manchester
she loved tandem cycling,
painting, design, architecture
loved music, loved to hike
played the viola da gamba
loved to dance the samba
was part druid, part gypsy
and part ketapang tree
with roots that reached for
the center of the Earth
loved chocolate flavoured
ice cream, ravi shankar
phillip glass
and had a heart that
let in the whole cosmos

taught me a bit
of what it means
to be blind
in a sighted world
taught me a bit
of what it means
to be in love with life
taught me a bit
of braille so i could
write her a few lines
across the seven seas
helped me realize that the
blind have sight and
the sighted are blind

sadly, though,
i can see her no more
Time has enveloped her
in a protective cloak
so dear reader do forgive me
if this clumsy attempt at
rhyme and meter
does sound a tad
corny and mad as a hatter
for i have no tale to
inspire the human heart
t’is i who am blind
t’is i who am blind.
