Wild Horses of Assateague Island

Wild Horses of Assateague Island by Hard-Rain.
The island has a couple hundred feral descendants of the domesticated horse. To this point I have never posted a photo of a captive or domestic animal. This may be a gray area. They live as wild animals but they seem very comfortable around people. The population is thinned regularly with the excess horses going to auction.

These horses are cool but you better not leave anything edible out at your campsite.

Hmm... are they wild or not? Do they come when you call them? Would they starve if you didn't feed them? Would they thrash the hell out of you if you tried to take one of their young? If there were no people around, would the horses still be there? Are my questions leading to a point?

They're wild in my book. Great series!

Outstanding shots of the wild horses. The top shot with the islands in the background looks amazing. These horses reminds me of the wild mustangs we have in Oregon. Sadly, they are culled often and if not adopted out, they end up slaughtered in Mexico.

Great shots! My family used to camp on Assateague Island. I have so many fond memories of seeing the wild ponies there.

"Going to auction" does not seem like a nice thing..........
Not sure I want to know the details though.

They are so pretty and I would love to see wild horses!

Yeah. They round them up once a year, too.
For the amateur, there's nothing to distinguish them from a barnyard nag, really, except their story and their surroundings.

Beautiful shots of the horses. They're like the cow elk in Yellowstone, very habituated to humans, but still wild. How were the mosquitos? I needed a blood transfusion the last time I went. I had bites on bites.

Awesome shot with nice color contrasts in the first photo. They seem a little shorter and stockier than the typical domesticated horses to me. And they do look healthy for wild horses. Glad to see them and find out about them. Thanks.

@bigbuzz - Yes, on Assateague Island. But most had big ID collars and not the most photegenic. And you have a nice neighborhood!
