Virginia "Round" Barn 2, One of a Pair

This barn is the near-twin of the one in the preceding photo; both are 12-sided, both are on farms accessed from VA 230 south of the town of Madison, and both were built by Haywood "Tiny" Dawson nearly 100 years ago. The barn above is the first of the two built, and its owner -- the granddaughter of Theodore Hoffman, the man for whom Dawson built the barn, and the sixth generation of the family to live on the farm -- secured its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 (#09000242), where it is listed as the Hoffman barn (some sources refer to it as the Gentry barn, the last name of the current owner). In 2011, the barn was repaired by another Dawson, the great-grandson of the original builder [information from a short piece in the January-February 2012 issue of Blue Ridge Country, p. 18]. As noted in the caption to the preceding photo, the Dale Travis listing of Virginia Round Barns has some information for these two barns scrambled.

This was taken two weeks ago on a photo outing with Flickr friend Tim Carrier (tcpix). It was near the end of the day when we got to this point, and we had to shoot from the road toward to afternoon sun, which fortunately was not very bright but nonetheless was a factor. I'd like to get photos under better conditions, in part to show the red paint of this barn to better advantage. Best in light box.
