Basket case - Longaberger office building
The Longaberger Company of Newark, Ohio, makes baskets. This is its office building, made to look like one of its products. It's striking to come upon a seven-story basket -- not counting the handles! According to information on roadsideamerica.com, the basket/building is 192 x 126 feet at the base and 208 x 142 feet at the top, and was first occupied in December 1997.
Update (July 2017): Unwittingly, my "basket case" title was prophetic, as this building now stands empty and the company is all but gone. According to a Wikipedia piece, Longaberger sales peaked at about $1 billion in 2000, three years after this building was occupied, and one year after founder Dave Longaberger's death, after which his daughter headed the company. By 2012, sales were down 90% from the peak, in 2013 Longaberger was bought out, in 2014 the company stopped paying property taxes on the HQ basket building, and in mid-2016 there were about 75 employees remaining, down sharply from a peak of over 8,200.
