Lateral Moraines![]() The peak in the centre of the range of Mountains is Mount Baldwin. The raised ground in the middle of the scene is formed of lateral moraines.
A lateral moraine is formed from the debris that falls onto a glacier and is moved along it laterally as the glacier flows down the valley. When the ice melts the lateral moraine is deposited. I loved geography at school. I think that's why I enjoyed this days drive from Death Valley to Yosemite. It was like driving through everything I'd learnt in O and A level geography classes.
