Dalles smelter + Mt. Adams

Wow, who says you can't make silk out of sow's ear? This pic almost makes the aluminum plant look pretty! That plant which isn't in operation anymore, sits adjacent to a Martin Marietta/Lockheed superfund site - but Mt. Adams in the distance kinda makes you forget about all that. Certain locals call the site, the flattop hill behind the smelter, Mt. Cyanide. Nothing grows there.

Beautiful landscape and but for the towers the factory would almost melt into it.

The mention of Mt. Cyanide reminds me of Jared Diamond discussing the long-term effects of industries on the land in his excellent book "Collapse". It's the scariest book I've read perhaps ever - because it appears so sober, balanced and rational. I'd recommend that one to anyone.
