Northampton State Hospital

Northampton State Hospital by Kirkbride.
The view from up here (on top of the administrative center) was great. You could see over nearby Smith College and the town of Northampton out into the Connecticut River Valley. It was especially awe-inspiring when the weather was clear like it was on this day.

There used to be a large cupola a little further up from this spot, but it was removed some time before the hospital closed. Substantial remodeling of the admin's section was done at some point in the twentieth-century and it was probably removed then. Afterwards, in its place was a small box-like structure. The "box" had a siren in it, probably used to announce the change of shifts and such things. I think I have a picture of it. Maybe I'll post that too.
