Massachusetts Kirkbride (abandoned)![]() ![]() I can't say for certain, but I imagine this paint job was done in the sixties or early seventies. This sort of colorful abstract wall-painting wasn't uncommon in state hospital wards during that time frame.
Obviously it's an attempt to cheer the place up a bit--the building was probably pretty run-down by this time and somewhat depressing. But the strong colors and weird, abstract pattern of this decoration seem bizarre and disturbingly chaotic to me. It's not the kind of decoration I would choose to make a place more pleasant, or calm. I'm sure it was done with the best of intentions though regardless of my impression. Cool photograph. I always find the juxtoposition of the forward-looking 1960s décor and the decay surrounding it quite poignant - its almost as if you can see the intentions of the people who designed these places literally peeling from the walls. Always a sad image to witness.
