Northampton State Hospital![]() ![]() When the windows aren't all boarded up or otherwise obscured, there's a lot of light inside Kirkbride buildings during the day. They were built to take special advantage of daylight so that every ward received the maximum amount of sunshine. The relative thinness of the wing sections combined with the great number and size of windows contributed to this, as well as the orientation of the building in relation to the sun's (apparent) path across the sky.
In this ward, part of this hallway was dark because of closed doors and obscured windows, while other areas were completely open to the light, making for some unusual lighting patterns. Would you like to comment?Sign up for a free account, or sign in (if you're already a member). |
