Blustry

Blustry by Haggis Chick.
I needed to clear my head today and with the weather as blustry as it was I found this little spot on the way home from college.

Having completed or just almost completed a project I have been working on for college religiously over the past 4 weeks why do I feel so flat? It looks like I'm set for getting an A but when I look back at what I've done I think my images are shit!!! *sighhhhh* I chose to do "Portraiture in the Workplace" with a pretty good theme (or so I thought) but why after seeing everyone's beautiful landscapes etc do I feel so crap about my landscape pics? After posting Down by the sea I vowed to improve on my landscapes and as suggested by others I've thrown myself in the frame....................but here I am still wondering did I get the composition right?

I think I'm just going through a phase of doubting my own abilites which I think isn't a bad thing as that will probably in the long run push me further.

Just had to get that off my chest!

Yeah i'm sure you've got everything "right", missy.. But I'd bet you anything that i'd enjoy your pics far more than the pics from other people on your course...no matter how 'technically' superior they claim to be...
Fantastic, love the landscape elements alone - the clouds, the fence, the sun - but throwing yourself into the frame was an bloody excellent idea indeed!
The figure of you, in the gleaming jacket with your wild hair and wild eye, makes this pic quintessential Haggis quirkiness for me. Love it!!

This image has it all, the interesting landscape and you. This is a wonderful composition and your posture with your hair blowing in the wind and yours half turn back of adds an interesting level of tension and movement. The calm and warm colors add a to the relaxed atmosphere that this image radiates

Ok, so don' ttake this as negative, just a question but you'll have to wait to the end.
I like the crop, the sun and the refractions are nice with you holding up the left, the curve of the track of bricks... it's all nice but one thing distracts me though it could be due to the nature of the hills there... it seems to not be level? Is the right side higher due to the hills natural way or is it that the camera wasn't mounted quite level on the stand?
That issue aside (which can be edited) I like the image and feel adding you to the foreground is a nice enhancement to the image, well your hair, the look, the clothes all give it a feeling as described of running off somewhere for a great adventure!

The landscape is excellent but by adding you into it it brings it to life with the sun shinning on you and your hair.
Without you in it no one would realize the weather go on around you.

This is good landscape and I think it is more of a landscape than a self portrait because the eye is drawn to the hill and the grass and the big sunny thing up in the corner there, whatever that thing is I've never seen one myself but I've heard tales of olde about such a sunny thing.

In this photo you're the one we're all sharing the lovely view with.

If you ever have those doubts creeping back into your head just tell them "I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am." :o)

@ Bradford  Pro User  says:

This is really stunning work. I love this image. It has that "walk on the wildside" type of feel to it. I love the pose and how you are addressing the camera with your back to us. The hair blowing all over the place is a nice touch. The hay and straw is interesting because we don't see that in the U.S.

I feel like I'm a participant in this image. It's as if I'm driving my car and you have become aware of my car and have given me this glance while looking over your shoulder. This is a very, very powerful pose and that look in your eyes...wow!

I think those suggestions to put your yourself in the landscapes was very clever and intelligent advice. To me, it gives the landscape more life, appeal, and it personalizes it.

When you spoke, "but why after seeing everyone's beautiful landscapes etc do I feel so crap about my landscape pics?" it reminds me of what Julia Soul once said about human doubt in the arts.."If you are never scared or in doubt it means you never took the chances to grow and improve."

I further that note...it's not the artist who needs to compare herself to others, it is the artist who needs to accept that just completing a genre of a few works for the first time is a " cutting of the teeth " endeavor ( this is based solely on the pics in your portfolio because I haven't seen too many works of landscape or nature photography).

It’s almost like asking Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel on his first attempt at painting. Sometimes it's not wise to compare yourself with anybody, but compare yourself with the progress and growth you’ve made the last time. Another point is that unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you sometimes will never grow. And sometimes courage does not always roar. Sometimes it’s a quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”

People who are committed and have passion will improve over time, but only if they grasp that they can't be perfect their first times out. Permanence is something that is a bad word in the arts. If one tries to get out and do something out of their comfort zone that person can really gain new skills and understanding.

I have no doubt that you will be a standout landscape artist, but in the Buddhist sense of the tradition, it's best to embrace the acceptance that you are new to this arena.

The best of all things is to learn. Money can be lost or stolen, health and strength may fail, but what you have committed to your mind is yours forever...nobody can ever take that away. There are special things that we have achieved as humans that people just can't take away from us no matter how hard they try. The biggest is the artist's soul and passion to create. They can't take away your voice, your ambitions, your dreams, your ability to create...the ability to bring joy to others and the ability to bring joy to yourself...

In this case of mastering landscapes.... your learning curve with landscape--and the very wise inclusion of your self image--will grow very fast. Our lives sometimes are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens; not by what life brings to us, but the attitude we bring to life.

I always tell my students that producing and creating Fine Art Photography Images is not easy--In fact it's the most difficult of the arts--the obstacles that one faces are very hard to engage an audience...if It were easy to create photographic fine art, everybody would be doing it.

Joanne, you made 7 Nature and landscape prints that really impressed me. "Undiscovered", "A Stormy Night" , "What I See", " A Summers Day (the best I've ever seen)", "The Storm is Over", and "Ooops I killed Mommy" were incredibly wonderful scenic landscape works that have very high artisitic merit.

These are virtuoso works of fine art in my humble opinion. These works are memorable, very memorable...they move and push the envelope of what's possible in humanity and it's creative spirit.

Once again you continue to astonish. I wish you the best and you have my full unconditional support and encouragement always.

P.S. That is a really "wide angle" lens. The only two companies that go that wide at 10mm are Sigma and Canon (I still think Canon, Nikon, and Sigma make the best glass in lenses. Oh, and btw your composition here is perfecto magic.

All this I wrote about kinda reminds me of this quote one of my past girlfriends told me, " Aspire. Inspire. What are you going to do to change the world?"

Love the way the wind is whipping your hair & the clouds, sexy biker-chick look btw! Even the tall grass in foreground and the lens flare add to a quirky landscape that you should be proud of. Don't worry so much about technical attributes, the way you present the image is the key and this one rates high. (mostly because of your position in it)

i think it is normal to be a bit insecure sometimes but i think in most cases that comes from trying to measure up to something that is not who we are... when we find our true voice nobody can be as good as we are in that particular thing, and we don't have to compete with anybody else but only with who we were yesterday as opposed to who we can be tomorrow...

just a thought :-) keep shooting dear!!

Thank you all for the comments. I wish I could always reply as I read the comments but half the time I never have time. Anyway it’s a good excuse to read the comments all over again ;-))

@Family – I’ve often wondered why everyone wants to straighten out the world ;-), yep my camera was on a tripod and it was straight (I have a level inbuilt)! I live in a very hilly country, with lots of fields and this place I went to certainly wasn’t straight. However, I don’t really notice it a huge amount. Thanks for your comment.

@Vanrunner – Thanks for your comment, I’m having a my college pics are shit moment at the moment, perhaps one day I might upload some. There are one or two floating about in my stream somewhere.

@hOrza – LOL

@geoff – Love your description.

@neltek – 10-20mm Canon, thanks kiddo.

@C&R –Well I hope you enjoyed the haggis as much as I do ;-)

@MMaeb – The feet thing was also mentioned above, but I don’t think it really bothers me that much. I have deliberately cropped it that way as both of my feet were fully in the frame, I did think of cropping it a little more but I liked the exact position I was in with this crop. Thanks for your comment though wifey.

@bekah – Aww thanks.

@Bradford – Yep, really a wide angle! Thanks.

@iwilliam – I used to love going for a ride on my hubby’s bike way back in the day. Nothing like lifting the lid on the helmet to blast away the hangover from the night before!!

@Rob – Yeah I’m trying to learn all about this two thirds rule shit! Yeah I know it’s a shame not being able to see them large. There are some nasty people out there that like to steal images though so that’s why I keep em small!!

@illina – You are so right, I think I just have this competitive kind of nature and it really bugs me at times. This whole creativeness thing really messes up your brain. Thank you for your comment, it really made me sit back and think x

@Allure - ;-) xx

@Smudgy – Awww thanks missy! I think that everyone is really good at something in the class, it’s just really frustrating when you see the likes of your work amongst others and think “mmmm I wish I could take pics like that”!! I know we can’t be good at every subject it just pisses me off that I’m not that’s all ;-)) Your right though we wouldn’t be satisfied even if our pics were the best. Have a nice weekend too ma lovely xxxxxxxxx

Thank you all so much to all and the new visits and comments also. It’s very much appreciated. xxx

You've done a really great job here Joanne, combining a stunning SP with a striking landscape. And, I'd say your exposure is pretty much spot on, which is really clever considering the complex lighting. I must say, I find that little cluster of stones in the bottom right slightly distracting to the eye, but nevertheless, a great image, of which you should feel very proud.

Hey you, not going to repeat what Smudgy has said but you know its true :-))
This is a fabulous pic, and believe me I look at loads of your pics and the little green monster pokes its ugle head up and I wish to hell I had taken that pic.
I often put down my pics think they are crap and feel so useless I think whats the point!!
Seemingly though this is what makes us push ourselves to the limit and to be the worst critque of our own work. Does this make our photography better? Or does it just make us bloody miserable?

HC, this is really beautiful. The composition is really lovely, yo uhave such a great eye for an image, but here you show great skill with a lens, and I think it is excellent! The capture of your face is truly excellent.
Thank you so much for posting your work, it blows me away. :)

I'm admiring your use of an extra wide angle lens to capture the best features of the countryside and your reserve assets ;)
