Potterne, Porch House, Wiltshire

Potterne, Porch House, Wiltshire
The dendrochronological objective was to inform the stylistic dating by the Royal Commission on Historic Monuments. The date found for the north west parlour/solar wing accords with their dating and with the gold coins of 1448-77 found in a mortice. The hammer-beam-roofed Great Hall was sampled, but none of the timbers had sufficient rings to be dated, and two timbers supporting the dais were found to be of elm. The whole rear wing of the house (an added parlour) was constructed from elm, as were some elements in the wing dated. Dating commissioned by the owner. See VAG Wiltshire Conference Guide, 1990, p. 53.
