This phone isn't available yet in the US, so i had to special order it from overseas. That's actually Chinese (from Hong Kong).

Japanese phones, unfortunately, only work in Japan. I wish I could get my hands on a Japanese phone that worked in the US....

And, why this phone over an Iphone? What's unique about this one?

Oh I could go on and on...

Here's an interesting web page that describes this phone :
www.nokia.co.uk/n81

- Open API: Symbian OS, no need to "jailbreak" your phone, more applications
- Bluetooth (and WiFi)
- Unlocked phone (not tied to any cellular network)
- Instant Messaging
- Java
- ActiveSync Email
- Records movies
- 3G Connectivity
- 2 Cameras (2 mega-pixel in back, VGA in front)--for video calls
- LED Camera Flash
- Dedicated gaming buttons
- N-Gage Gaming Service
- Nokia Music Store
- Better web browser
- Scroll wheel
- Stereo loud speakers
- Longer lasting battery
- Internet phone calls (like skpe, in fact skype is coming soon to nokia)
- Multimedia messaging (MMS)
- Direct upload to Flickr from the camera
...

The real problem is that the iPhone is not a "real" smartphone. not as long as they continue to have a closed API. The Nokia NSeries phones are some of the most advanced phones available today (especially the N95 8GB: that is THE phone).

The iPhone has a very innovative user interface, but that is really about it. When it comes down to what it can actually do, there is actually nothing very special about the iPhone. In fact Apple has made some rather unpopular, and in my opinion "evil" moves that are very uncharacteristic of Apple, which included locking people into a particular network (AT&T), and actually intentionally "bricking" iPhones (rendering the phone inoperable, turning it into an expensive brick) if you try to install custom software. Screwing normal people out of the $400+ that they spent on the phone and turning it into a very expensive paperweight.

Apple has an incredible marketing organization that has hyped this thing so much, that most Americans don't actually know about the "N-Series" story, which is much better understood everywhere in the world outside of the US. Nokia really doesn't attack the US market as it does the rest of the world. I think it is because the US is rather special as the cellular Operators typically own the relationship between the customer and the phone, instead of the phone manufacturers. (Apple is the notable exception here). I don't think the networks are very happy about nokia trying to sell services that in the US are normally the realm of the Operators. So if you want an N-Series phone in the US you can forget about your Operator subsidizing the cost, you have to pay for the full cost of the phone. But for me, I think it is worth it as it gives me more freedom with what I choose to do with my phone.

Thanks for the info on the phone. I bought a very basic Nokia for my business a year ago and it is the best cell phone I have had in terms of reception and durability. It has been dropped on the cement several times, and laid in a shallow puddle for at least 15 minutes outside my car one day and still works like new. It has nothing fancy about it but it works even in Grove City from the dining room table. I have had phones that I have to do acrobats with to get them to receive a signal and would always drop calls.

Nice toy!! My fave phone was the LG TM510 that was my first phone. It sent and received calls from anywhere and it had a nice interface. My only complaints with that phone was that I couldn't originate a text message or download ringtones. BTW, Hassan, the network locking will be short-lived. It was intended that way or no one would be able to re-engineer it to use any other network.

Photoz Darkly: totally, i don't think operators will be able to continue this practice much longer. Right around when the whole iphone debacle broke with people getting their phones bricked from apple's update, nokia started running a really interesting campaign about unlocked phones:

We can only hope, right? I did think the whole thing with certain phones to certain vendors was stupid, but it was explained away by the CDMA vs GSM lack-of-a-network-standard thing. Now if we could only get somebody to do something about Blue-Ray vs HD-DVD!!

mary: well with you living in norway, I bet nokia has a stranglehold on the market! (although sony-ercisson is based in sweden). I've heard than many fins refer to Finland as "Nokialand". Nokia accounts for more than 25% of the Finnish GDP. Every nokia we buy supports the finnish economy, so be a good finn, and go buy a nokia :-) hahaha
