is this an oil pipeline?
Posted 29 months ago. ( permalink )

thefishface says:

Ahah! I new I recognised this as being one of the Icelandic pipelines which crop up here and there. It's not an oil pipeline, I expect, but more likely to be a steam or hot water line, since Iceland obtains a lot of energy by geothermal means.

ArnarBi  Pro User  says:

Brilliant. I have similar ones not far from my house..

saltsoda: They are water-lines, for hot water from geothermal sites.

Ole Begemann: If the pipes were straight, they would crack because they expand and contract as the temperature between day/summer and night/winter changes. The zig-zag makes them more flexible.

ArnarBi  Pro User  says:

@Ernesto Delgado: As someone has mentioned, this looks like the vicinity of Krafla (an active volcano), Myvatn. On Krafla the water that comes out of the drill sites is around 120°C (248 F). The reason it doesn't boil is because it's under pressure.

So the actual water in the pipes might be in the range 80-120°C
