The sun sets behind the Hanois Lighthouse on the winter solstice. This is the furthest south the sun will set all year. Interestingly though it is not the earliest time of the day that it will set all year - that happened back around the 6th of December.
Almost 8 months ago to the day since I last photographed this lighthouse from a completely different angle. The sun was equally impressive then but that time filtered by several million tons of Icelandic volcanic ash.
This photo was featured in The Big Picture, a photo blog by the Boston Globe on 22nd December 2010. Whilst I've had other photos used on the internet before this is by far the biggest blog to do so. There are some other stunning photos in the set so it's well worth checking out.
