Baba Swarnjit Singh teaches the principle of kirat karo (hard honest work) to his sons, Ajit Singh and Fateh Singh.
In earlier times transplantation of paddy used to be a community affair with most villagers pitching in. The green revolution ushered in an era of comfort and the Punjabi farmer became soft; hopelessly dependent on migrant labor from UP and Bihar for the most basic chores. Interestingly an improved standard of living in UP and Bihar has led to scarcity of migrant labor in Punjab. The changed scenario forced the Punjabi farmer into action. A recent community drive to transplant paddy by 200 farmers of Daoke village near Raja Sansi in Amritsar district is a heartening example of the Punjabi entrepreneurial spirit.
