Hi again dbadagna - I reckon tnis must be late 1980's or so. You may notive in my photostream I had several Billy Bragg photos, which led me to post 3 shots of Woody Guthrie shiowing the signs he put on his guitar. That led to these three shots showing the lettering on Pete's banjo. It's all in the spirit of a hommage, not my photos. See my tage "not my photo".

I am a huge Pete Seeger fan. I just saw the new documentary "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song" - it is wonderful!

It turned out that you had the most good photos of this :-) I added info about the message on the banjo to the Wikipedia article about Pete last night (it wasn't there before), but didn't know which decade or year he first did it. That would be good to know.

I saw him about 12 years ago at the Cuyahoga Valley Folk Festival in Ohio. I think he had one of his part-Spanish grandkids singing with him. I love the "Rainbow Quest" clips that are now appearing on YouTube, too.

I had a bad house fire which took my copy of David Dunaway's bio "How Can I Keep from Singing". A new edition is in the works. You can contact Dave at dunaway(insert_AT_sign_here)unm.edu and ask him what he knows about the first time Pete added words to his banjo. I suspect it goes back to the 1940's from Pete's travels with Woody Guthrie. Woody liked to put messages on his guitars.

Great, thanks so much. You might want to alter your comment so his email address doesn't have the "@" symbol--just replace it with AT or something like that, so he doesn't get so much spam (spammers "harvest" any such addresses they find on the Internet).
