A gift from a bank
This statue pair, by artist Steinunn Þórarinsdóttir, was a gift to Reykjavík from the bank SPRON in 2004.
Five years later, with Iceland suddenly plunged into enormous national debt by the bank collapse, the metaphor seems painfully apt.
In the background, not altogether unrelated to the drama: the Prime Minister's Office, building cranes and our unfinished over-budgeted white elephant of a Music and Conference Hall, the Central Bank hiding off the right edge, and on the left an upcoming main attraction: the Reykjavík District Court.
