@ak - this was a six-second exposure.

@Leviathor - judging by your photos, it looks like Lansing had a good show.

@Paola - everyone has a different way to take fireworks photos, but here are some of my tips. Again, this is just how I like to shoot, but it's worked well for me...
a) TRIPOD and REMOTE SHUTTER RELEASE.
b) Don't let too many fireworks go off in a single exposure -- the 'Grand Finale' is actually the worst time for fireworks photos. Just let one or two go off and you will get beautiful and dramatic photos. Too many fireworks going off can over-expose your shot.
c) Get lucky--you never know what you're gonna get with fireworks, so just take a hundred shots and something good will more than likely come out. I took about twenty exposures this night, and this one was the only one that had two sets of fireworks in it, one in the foreground and one in the background, and this was something I didn't expect at all.
d) Unless you're going for something more abstract like Leviathor's great fireworks photos, don't just take a photo of the fireworks. Try to get some foreground or background in your composition as well--nextography's photo of the Columbus fireworks is a good example.
e) Have fun, and don't forget to take your eye away from the camera to enjoy the show for a few moments!

hey post, I knew that comment wouldn't go over well. I don't mean to blast anyone who does HDR--I know you use it a lot, with impressive results--but I don't think it is beneficial in 'spontaneous' situations where you are trying to capture a single moment. Combining the most impressive exposures for a shot like this seems a bit like 'cheating' to me--but I suppose most digital RAW post-processing like brightness/contrast/saturation and exposure adjustments are cheating in a way. HDR is wonderful for still-life or landscapes where you're trying to get a well-balanced exposure, but for something like this I'd rather just shoot a few shots and pick the best one. I also don't like the pastel-ly, fake-looking, low-contrast colors that result from lackadaisical HDR processing.

I don't think it would be fair to call HDR "cheating". It's not exactly an elevated form, but cheating? Of course, more than half of my HDR attempts turn into pastel-ly, fake-looking, low-contrast crap that results from lackadaisical HDR processing (Yo.). Well maybe not lackadaisical, but I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to processing, that's for sure.

perhaps cheating is not the best word to use. I guess I'm a bit of a purist, and for me HDR crosses the line from 'photography' to 'computer generated imagery'.
