The Black Sea

    The coccolithophore (click here to read more about coccolithophore: earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/Coccolithophores/ )has been part of the Black Sea ecology for millennia. In the summer these calcite-shedding phytoplankton can color much of the Black Sea cyan, as is evident in this Aqua-MODIS image collected on July 15, 2012.
