SDO's Ultra-high Definition View of 2012 Venus Transit - 171 Angstrom

    Prev Next

NASA image captured June 5, 2012.

On June 5-6 2012, SDO is collecting images of one of the rarest predictable solar events: the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. This event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.

Great image! I'm intrigued by the very straight structure just to the bottom left of Venus...I wonder what that resulted from.

What a pic of that sun! So dramatically beautiful!
Is there anything that exists that we love and need that is universally seen as actually ugly?
even the insides of fruits and star clusters. Perhaps we're designed that way :-)
But I really mean this as a question :-)

I'm lost for words, just in awe of the amazing sun and how tiny Venus looks in comparison.
