No.5 - 1000 eyes all looking at you.

My favourite stare.
Scary face
Bogart face
Frown face
There's always one, isn't there?
Pirate hat or jockey helmet??
Crazy eyes (view large)
No.5 - 1000 eyes all looking at you. by greenwood100.
I bought this old postcard in a junk shop about 10 years ago and it still fascinates me today.
There is no date, location or copyright on the card just "L Maylott, Artistic photographer, Swindon".
I'd guess it is the 1920s in England. Not so many cameras around in those days - imagine trying to get all these people to look at your lens today.
Take a look in large to pick out and note a stare - my favourite face is the lad in the cap next to the "No.5" writing. If anyone has any ideas about where or when ....

I agree, this is a facinating photograph. The clarity of the faces is quite amazing too.

Wonderful find! I also like the fact that they're all wearing hats too! (well, most of them anyway)

Everyone used to wear hats in the olden days. Could it be related to this?

At least it confirms L. Maycott as a printer/photographer in Swindon in the '20s.

really is a fascinating picture. I have been staring at it for ages. What's more fascinating is not knowing where or what the shot is about.

Maybe its during the war, have you noticed that its only women, children and older men - not that that really help to find out what it is. It could just be that all the men are working.

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

Yeh, I can see why you find it fascinating... it just draws you in and you want to look at each individual face.... densly populated photo's of people are interesting in a weird kind of way... a fabric of society... each one a thread linking to eachother and also linking past to present... mmm interesting! Love your stream and your extreme talent and skill with your camera.. :o)

I have it on good authority (i.e.my sister!) that it was taken in the G.W.R. Park in Faringdon Road, Swindon August 1930's when the annual Children's fete was held. We have a similar photo.
Maylotts was a well-known Swindon photographers at 31 Faringdon Road, opposite the Weslyan chapel (& not too far from the park above). We have a number of family wedding photos & Christening photos taken by them.
