Guess who came looking for dinner?

Guess who came looking for dinner? by Green Wellies.
The dogs barked like crazy at one point last night and I knew the bear was in the garden. The biggest clue was the compost bin. It had been knocked over. The bear had good table manners. The compost was picked through, but I don't think it found much. In a way, the bear did me a favour. I was going to wait until spring before doing anything about it. This is the most amazing compost bin...all of $2 at the thrift store a few years ago. It's made by Rubbermaid, although I can't find any info on it. It's double-lined and I'm not sure if I even have it right way up! I drilled holes in the lid and use metal tent pegs through holes in the bottom rim to keep it in place. Three years of compost and it was about a third full. I just had to shovel away the latest veggie, coffee filters and eggshell bits and the rest was pure black gold simply crawling with red wiggler worms. I added a ring of it all around the rhubarb and spread the rest in various garden beds.

You always have the neatest things.....most always found at the Thrift Store.

So glad the dogs warned you and you were not outside.

We all need to be more like you and put our old stuff in a compost pile instead of give it to the garbage man.

Lisa...I have so little actual garbage for collection each week. I take plastics, newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard, tin cans etc. to the recycling depot (Habitat for Humanity has their own large metal container for anything with a deposit) and sort it there and what can be composted goes into this bin. I've composted for over 35 years. When the kids were young and I grew most of our own food in a huge veggie garden, the compost was literally a pile in the middle of it that I'd toss dirt over every now and then. When it snowed, the stuff just went on top of the snow and melted down into the pile come spring, when I'd dig it into the garden.

Bears as garden helpers! That's a new idea!

I've been composting since the Port Hope years, too, Barb, but I've never had a gizmo as efficient as this one. I guess the conical shape helps it work. I can vouch for the fact that the end product is fantastic fertilizer.

The bear stories always scare me a little. Do you ever go out for walks at night with the dogs? Or send them out for a pre-bedtime pee? Yikes!

The dogs go out several times during the evening. I stand by the back door, scan the garden with the flashlight and then tell them okay. They do their thing and head back to the door. Sometimes, they'll go barking and charging up to the woods, but I have a shoulder-height berm of cuttings and branches and there's no way for them to get through.

I guess the bear situation isn't quite as scary as I think it is. I'm an urban sissy!

Another thought on garbage: don't you find that not eating meat eliminates quite a bit of messy, smelly garbage, Barb?

Wonderful story...I do envy you and your garden and compost bin! The last time I had a garden and a compost bin it was an overwhelming responsibility, but it grew quite well. My main problems were wild pigs and deer, and building a fence to keep them out was quite a feat!
