Tea break in the back forty...

Tea break in the back forty... by Green Wellies.
Gwen's mother-in-law, Lillian, came to visit from Ontario last week and she brought along photos of herself as a baby. We all think Chloe is going to look exactly like her Grandma Lillian. This photo was taken over sixty years ago on the family farm and shows Lillian and her father. She remembers her mom packing lunches and making tea and heading out to the fields to take it to the farm hands. That little scarf tied on her head is adorable. I asked Lillian if I could have a copy of this incredible photograph, so that I could share it with you.

Wow, not only a wonderful family memento, but a really top-quality photograph. Terrific!

I'd like to ask when it was taken, but Grandma L. may not wish to have her age published. ; - )

I love the history passed on in families, isn't it amazing to think of hard labor and a tea break with lunch all in the same sentence!

If Lillian was about 2 in this photo, then it was taken approximately 62 years ago. There's another photo she showed me that's taken on the same day. It shows the old baby carriage that Lillian's mom used to transport the lunches to the fields.

That's so interesting, Barb. So, the photo was taken in the late forties. It seems as though it could have been earlier - there's a somewhat timeless quality to farm life before it all became mechanized. I can see a log cabin in the background, left. I wonder if someone lived in it or perhaps it was just an outbuilding.

Do you remember if the baby carriage/lunch cart was wicker, Barb?

I'll have to ask Lillian about the log cabin. The baby carriage was one like I used to have for Emily on Hope Street...looked dark in colour with the hood that pulled up and big wheels with wire spokes. It was Lillian's baby carriage and I guess she got to ride along with the lunches!

Lillian was able to ask her mom about this photo and was told that the man in the foreground, holding the cup, is her uncle, her father's only brother and the other man was a neighbour who is still living in the area.
It was the fall harvest. They were at the point of feeding the cut grain stalks into the machine that separated the grain from the stalk. The grain was then stored in the granary that can be seen in the background.

Thanks for the interesting info, Barb. Isn't it wonderful that Lilian's mother is still alive and can answer these questions.
