Old-growth forest marked for clearcut, Finland

Old-growth forest marked for clearcut, Finland by Greenpeace Finland.
Metsähallituksen avohakkaamaksi suunnittelemaa luonnontilaista vanhaa metsää Suomussalmen Ahjolan kylän Luolavaarassa. Metsässä tavataan muun muassa luonnonsuojelulailla rauhoitettua liito-oravaa. Avohakkuilla on Metsähallituksen mukaan tarkoitus lisätä metsäluonnon monimuotoisuutta.

Old-growth forest marked for clearcutting by governmental forestry enterprise Metsähallitus. Location: Suomussalmi, Kainuu-region, Eastern Finland. This forest is inhabited by red-listed flying squirrel. The forests are in natural state. Oldest trees are several hundreds of years old. Stora Enso, UPM, Vapo Timber, Pölkky Oy and Kuhmo Oy are biggest customers of Metsähallitus in the region of Kainuu.

Damn, it would be very interesting to hear their view on this. It takes at least 20 years before there is something to be called a forest after they have cut the trees in a forest like this.
