The Grove Hotel, Christmas 2009We transformed The Grove over a four day period into a winter wonderland, inspired by imagery from C S Lewis' Narnia chronicles. I wanted to avoid using too many glittery things, so I kept mainly to white by painting all the Birch trunks white, using whole white-dipped birch trees and bunches of magnolia branches. Here, in the events area, we hung hundreds of acrylic icicles from the branches. Cellophane edging helped keep the fake snow in place on the tables, which were dressed with juniper plants in metal pots.

The Silver Birch trunks were sprayed with white emulsion and then tied to the pillars. By using white cable ties, we were able to quickly create branches for the trees, using magnolia. I chose magnolia branches because they were relatively cheap and for their interesting shapes, which allowed me to 'sculpt' these trees the way I wanted.

The branches were hung with 1000 mirror card gift tags, which were printed with logos from the Grove's Christmas marketing graphics. They shimmer in the breeze from the air conditioning vents.
