Happy Thanksgiving

Supermarket Produce

Here are the bins of apples:
Red Delicious,
Beautiful but spurious;
Sweet little Galas with their stippled pink cheeks;
And Granny Smiths,
Acerbic and firm.

And over here sunny Valencia oranges glow
Above golden-skinned red grapefruit,
Which ooze sugary pink juices
When you cleave their roseate flesh.

Here mellow pears with plump bottoms drowse
By unctuous avocados
And tough green peaches with stubborn, fuzzy chins.

And just across the way,
Pale, bruised mushrooms,
Fleshy and redolent of earth,
Huddle stoically in their cardboard cartons
While cerebral cauliflowers brood
Over callow scallions,
Frail lettuces lounge gracefully in ruffled skirts
Of green watered silk,
And honest cabbages and turnips
Rub shoulders with sanguine imposters
Shamelessly masquerading
As tomatoes.
