so this year is all about doing new things. so when annesa told me last night that barack obama was coming to saint peter's college today for a rally, i thought hey, let's do it!
so obviously i got there late, around 3:15 pm when doors opened at 2:30. the line was pretty crazy: it stretched from up montgomery towards kennedy, along kennedy, down glenwood, almost completely reaching to west side avenue. i felt a little defeated at first but was reassured when they told us everyone would get in (they told us capacity was 6,000 but they were gonna stretch it to 10,000?) so i waited and i waited and i waited. i listened to conversations of people around me. so many different people were there. from all ages and from all races. it felt a bit inspiring to see so many people lined up that cared about the future of their country. some people travelled hours. and i live so close, hah
it was around 4 or so when i reached the halfway point along kennedy boulevard when the police told us that they had filled to capacity. everyone was pissed to say the least. some left, but i stuck around because i know when it comes to lines, you have to be patient, because the patient people are the ones that get in later. so we waited and waited and people around me were chanting "OBAMA OBAMA!". so the waiting paid off when they let the remainder of us into the outside quad. forming a U shape around the quad, the police department confined us within the police tape. shortly after, the police warned us that the secret service were around us so we had to stay under control or else.
pretty random but someone saw i had my 30D on me and told me that he would pay me money if i got a good obama shot. he said he forgot his camera at home, and i asked him if he was a photographer, to which he said he was a freelance. he wanted me to get a shot of him with obama. he told me he was a filmmaker, and that he focused mainly on documentaries.
moments later obama came out and the crowd went CRAZY. he greeted us and thanked us for coming out and said he was sorry he couldn't stay long because he had to talk to the thousands of people inside. he said he acknowledged all those people out here: the students who have to pay for school, the people who needed healthcare, etc. he thanked us for his support and then he said he had a few minutes to walk around and shake hands. that's when things went a little crazy. pushing and shoving and you know, the whole mob mentality. this is one of the better shots i got of him. and unfortunately, i couldn't get a picture of the filmmaker with him.
afterwards, the crowd dispersed and that was it. there were news vans all over the place. it was really exciting being there. granted, i wasn't able to get in, but just being amongst all those people and feeding off their energy and enthusiasm was amazing.

this is a great shot! the expression on the
faces of the 2 girls on the bottom right
totally MAKE the shot!
i'd heard about the auditorium filling up,
and obama coming out to address the folks
outside. what a nice guy. still, i can't see
him winning the presidential election.
